Bharti Airtel Q1FY24 Results – Revenue Outperforms, Profit Disappoints

Bharti Airtel Ltd, India’s second-largest telecom operator, released its first-quarter results for fiscal year 2024, showcasing a mixed set of performance indicators. While the company’s revenue exceeded estimates, its net profit fell short of expectations.

Revenue Growth and Profit

During the first quarter of FY2024, Bharti Airtel’s revenue from operations witnessed a robust growth of 14%, reaching ₹37,440 crore compared to ₹32,804.6 crore in Q1 FY23. However, the company’s net profit remained flat at ₹1,612.5 crore, slightly above the ₹1,607 crore recorded in the same period last year. The net profit figure fell short of Bloomberg analysts’ estimate of ₹2,861 crore.

Exceptional Loss

In Q1 FY2024, Bharti Airtel faced a one-time loss of ₹3,416.3 crore, which contributed to its profit coming below expectations.

Customer Growth and Market Positioning

Despite the profit challenges, the company showcased strong customer growth in various segments. Bharti Airtel added 5.6 million new 4G customers and achieved the highest-ever postpaid customer additions in any one quarter. Moreover, they registered an industry-leading Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of ₹200 per month, a significant increase from ₹183 in Q1 FY2023.

Segment-wise Performance

  1. Mobile Revenues – The company’s mobile revenues experienced a 12.4% YoY growth, driven by improved realizations and strong 4G customer additions.
  2. Business Revenues – Bharti Airtel’s business revenues surged by 15.8% YoY, supported by strong demand for data and connectivity solutions, along with emerging competencies.
  3. Homes Business Segment – The homes business segment achieved a revenue growth of 25.4% YoY, capitalizing on the growing demand for high-speed, reliable broadband in India. The company added 413,000 customers during the June quarter, reaching a total base of 6.5 million.
  4. Digital TV – Bharti Airtel’s Digital TV segment boasted a customer base of 15.9 million at the end of the quarter, and the company’s focus on market-specific strategies and simplified pricing helped maintain market share.

Summary

Despite a flat net profit and an exceptional loss, Bharti Airtel demonstrated commendable growth in revenue and customer acquisition across various segments. The company’s focus on quality customers, premiumization, and data services contributed to its industry-leading ARPU and market positioning.
