A senior state government official, preferring to remain anonymous, revealed that discussions with at least six key players are in advanced stages, encompassing wafer fabs, display fabs, OSAT (outsourced semiconductor assembly and test) players, and various suppliers. The state is gearing up for significant announcements in the coming months, with investments expected to reach staggering amounts in the billions of dollars, along with monthly reports ranging from INR 1,000 to 2,000 crore.
India’s Thrust for Semiconductor Manufacturing
The Indian government is encouraging global chipmakers to establish fabrication manufacturing, testing, and packaging units in the country. They have set aside a substantial $10 billion financial incentive pool to facilitate this. As part of the Semicon India program, the Centre offers up to a 50% subsidy on initial investments for companies venturing into chip or display fabs within India.
Enthusiastic State-Level Support
Indian states are proactively offering an additional 25% subsidies on investments and providing subsidized land, power, and other essential facilities after realizing the critical importance of the semiconductor industry. These efforts aim to attract global players and significant local conglomerates to set up their operations in India. After their split, the official also revealed that the government expects separate applications from Vedanta and Taiwan’s Foxconn. The allocated land previously earmarked for the Vedanta Foxconn Semiconductor Ltd. joint venture can be transferred to new entities. At the same time, additional land parcels are also available within the expansive 900 sq. km area, providing ample space to accommodate numerous players.
